Soothing Post-Sun Protection

Sometimes, despite your best intentions, a day in the sun can wreak havoc on your skin, leaving it looking and feeling less than desirable. "Skin responds to sun damage with redness, tenderness, inflammation, and dryness," explains S. Manjula Jegasothy, MD, a Miami-based dermatologist. "Depending on your skin tone, damage can begin occurring in as little as five minutes." She adds that while skin does naturally repair itself, this protective function decreases with age and accumulated damage. Help your skin help itself with after-sun products, which are rich in antioxidants such as vitamin C or E that combat free radicals. Other ingredients to look for include shea butter, which has moisturizing benefits, and soothing aloe vera or lavender oil, which are excellent for alleviating inflammation. Not only do these ingredients feel great on irritated, flushed skin, but before long, your skin will be back to its original soft, smooth, even-toned state.

Friendships Can Keep You Healthy

By Chris Crowley and Henry S. Lodge, MD
Making deep emotional connections with friends and family reduces stress, creates more happiness, and actually keeps your healthier.

Getting Connected
There is an actual, physical chunk of brain that runs your emotions called the limbic brain. You can trace its development back a hundred million years. You can see it on an MRI. Every second you spend with other people, your limbic brain is tuning in to them, being changed by their moods, and changing theirs in turn. It's a constant, life-affirming limbic dance.

Experimental psychologists have known for decades that we share moods. If you don't believe me, just think of the people who make you feel better simply by walking into a room. These sorts of interactions feel so good (directly and unconsciously) that we would wither away without them. This is why you should never underrate the emotional side of your life.
Women are better than men at keeping the limbic dance going by working to ensure that families stay connected as the years go by and by building lasting friendships and deep connections from the many different aspects of their lives. High school and college friends, friends from work, friends from raising children together, from neighborhood committees, from shared vacations -- sure, some of these bonds and friendships fall away as part of the natural cycle of growing and changing, but most women find new friendships to replace them. Women who don't find close friendships, who have trouble keeping up connections, need to make an effort to change those patterns.

Hundreds of research studies confirm that isolation hurts us and connection heals us through the same physical mechanisms as exercise and healthy diet. Blood vessels are measurably more elastic, the heart's ability to respond to extraordinary demands is higher, cardiac inflammatory protein levels are lower, and blood pressure response to exercise is better in more connected people. Their stress-hormone blood profiles are also measurably healthier than those of isolated people.

Simply Sun-Kissed

It has never been easier to get a natural-looking bronze. Gone are the notorious orange tint and unpleasant smell, replaced with advanced formulas that dry instantly, smell sweet, and create a faux tan so real-looking that nobody will know it came from a bottle. Here, a primer on achieving sun-kissed radiance.

The single most important step for a streak-free tan? "Exfoliation, exfoliation, exfoliation!" says Regina Viotto, spa director of New York City's Paul Labrecque Salon and Spa. To guarantee even coverage, use a scrub in the shower, followed by moisturizer to hydrate rough patches, which tend to sop up color. For goof-proof application, pick a tinted product, so you can see exactly where you've already put the tanner. Post-tanning, use a hand-wipe on palms to remove residue, advises Fiona Locke, senior sunless technician for California Tan, in Los Angeles. Finally, reapply at least once a week -- and to avoid streaks, always wait three hours before using a second coat. Happy bronzing!

Our Self-Tanning Picks

1. L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Dual Action Instant Bronzer and Self-Tanning Lotion for Face, $9.99, mixes bronzer for immediate color with vitamin E-infused self-tanner for hydration.

2. Olay Quench Radiance Reviver, $6.99, blends a 24-hour moisturizer with a hint of self-tanner for understated color that becomes slightly more noticeable with each daily application.

3. Coppertone Endless Summer Sunless Tanning Bronzing Foam, $11, dries in just five minutes and contains Hydrosil to develop color in only 30 minutes. The bronzer provides an instant tint for easy application.

4. Comodynes Self-Tanning Towelettes, $14.99 for 8, are pre-moistened for easy use with just enough tanner in one towelette for face, neck, and decolletage; use one wipe for each arm and leg.

Walking For Fitness

Walking is the best form of exercise to increase your health and fitness. It’s easy to begin, you can set your own goals and it’s free! Whilst others may encourage you to join a gym you may lack the confidence to begin exercising in such a public arena. Walking for fitness will give you the flexibility to exercise wherever and whenever you want.

Starting your walking program is much easier than joining an expensive gym. In fact, the only equipment you’ll need will be a comfortable pair of walking shoes, although taking along a MP3 player and headphones can help you set a steady pace. Walking to music will encourage you to keep up your step and listening to inspirational or motivational speakers while walking can often encourage you to walk a greater distance!

It’s great to have flexibility but initially you may find having a set schedule very helpful while you establish your walking routine. For the first three weeks set aside a definite time each day for your walking program. Write the schedule in your diary or daily planner and don’t let anything come between you and your daily walk. Why? Because too often exercise commitments are broken because you put someone else’s needs before your own. For 21 days you are going to put your own health and well being first. You must begin taking care of you! Starting now.
If you are new to exercise begin your new fitness walking program slowly. Start with a daily 10-minute walk at a moderate pace before increasing to a 20-minute walk. By the end of your first week of walking you should be able to comfortably walk for 20 minutes.

During your second week of walking increase your distance and your pace. At the end of 14 days you should be walking for 30 minutes and you’ll be surprised at how much ground you can cover. This might also be a good time to review your eating habits and establish healthy patterns. You will accomplish a lot more is you maintain a healthy lifestyle while establishing your life-changing and possibly life-saving walking program.

When you enter your third week of walking you may consider introducing a few hills or stairs into your daily walk. At the end of three weeks you’ll have established your walking pattern, you should be feeling much more energetic and start noticing some weight loss – especially if you’ve modified your eating habits during this period.

You can now continue your fitness program by walking at a smart pace for around 45 minutes at least three times a week. The benefits to your health will be enormous and ongoing.
Beginning a walking program can help you reduce your weight and reduce your risk of coronary heart disease, increase your bone density, reduce stress and benefit the joints. Walking keeps you active, increases mental alertness, boosts your energy levels and improves your overall well-being.

Walking off the weight may be just what the doctor ordered but remember to consult your doctor before beginning this or any other exercise program, especially if you are overweight and haven’t exercised on a regular basis for some time.

More on Melanoma

On the Horizon: Melanoma Vaccines The current push in research is for a vaccine to teach the immune system to recognize and destroy melanoma cells, something scientists have seen happen spontaneously in a small number of patients. Dozens of different vaccines are being studied, many in clinical trials around the country, but most researchers don't expect anything to be available to the public for at least five years. Current melanoma patients, however, can take part in the research and may be eligible for one or more trials, based on age, gender, melanoma stage, and other health factors. Ask your doctor about clinical vaccine trials, or go to www.clinicaltrials.gov for more information on trials in conjunction with the National Institutes of Health.

Melanoma and Sun It would seem that avoiding melanoma means staying out of the sun at all costs, but a recent report, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute earlier this year, found that people who spent a great deal of time in the sun before their diagnosis with melanoma actually had better survival rates than those who spent less time in the sun. "Our study does not imply that people should not be concerned about excess sun exposure, but indeed a small amount of sun exposure should be okay," says study author Marianne Berwick, PhD, head of epidemiology and cancer prevention at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. "The take-away message from our study is that the sun is not the only cause of melanoma. While sun safety is very important, there's no need to be totally neurotic about it." No one is sure yet what constitutes a safe dose of sun, but a sunburn is a sure sign you've crossed the line. What's also important, Berwick notes, is simple skin awareness. In her research, people who regularly noted changes in their skin's color, texture, and markings cut their risk of getting melanoma, and dying from it, in half.

4 Anti-Aging Strategies

4 Anti-Aging Strategies You Can Do Now
In the absence of a magic pill, here's what you can do to stay young and even prolong your life.
By Priscilla Grant

Judith Reichman, MD, a Los Angeles gynecologist, isn't waiting for an anti-aging pill. For her latest book, Slow Your Clock Down (Morrow, 2004), Reichman combed medical literature for these solid disease-prevention and anti-aging strategies:

Make exercise a top priority. "Aside from antibiotics for a life-threatening infection," says Reichman, "there's no medicine any physician can prescribe that can affect the quality and length of your life like regular exercise."

Get tested. Catch problems early, says Reichman, with such basic screening exams as mammograms, Pap smears, colonoscopy, bone-mineral density scans, and any blood tests you should have, given your individual risk factors for heart disease, stroke, cancer.

Manage your weight. You don't have to do ultra-strict calorie restrictions. Reichman follows what she calls a "Mediterranean meets L.A." diet, which includes a balance of fish, chicken, and turkey, veggies, egg whites, nonfat yogurt, whole grains, nuts, fruit, and occasionally one glass of wine with dinner. Cynthia Kenyon, having observed how high glucose levels negatively affected her C. elegans worms, started following a low-glycemic-index diet herself -- no bread, pasta, potatoes, or rice, but plenty of green vegetables, olive oil, eggs, fish, meat, cheese, nuts, and some fruits.

Don't smoke. But, of course, you know this.

Cholesterol in a Vegetarian Diet

Blood Cholesterol and Dietary Cholesterol
The word 'cholesterol' can refer to either 'blood-cholesterol' (the sort the body manufactures in the liver), or 'dietary-cholesterol' (the sort we ingest from food). Dietary cholesterol is obtained exclusively from animal sources (eg. meat, egg yolks, dairy etc) and is absent in plants.

High Blood Cholesterol Related to Heart Disease
Whether vegetarian or meat-eater, a person's blood-cholesterol levels are closely related to the risk of heart disease. The lower the cholesterol level the less chance of heart attack or stroke.

Saturated Fat Ups Blood Cholesterol in Vegetarians & Meat Eaters
Nutritionists and dietitians used to think that a person's intake of dietary-cholesterol affected blood-cholesterol levels, but now things are less clear. It appears that saturated fat-intake rather than dietary-cholesterol-intake is more closely related to raised blood-cholesterol levels. In other words, the higher your intake of saturated fat, the higher your blood-cholesterol levels.

Saturated Fat in Vegan Diet
As a vegan diet contains neither meat nor dairy fats, it is typically lower in saturated fat, which perhaps explains the low levels of coronary heart disease in vegans.

Saturated Fat in Ovo-Lacto Vegetarian Diet
The ovo-lacto vegetarian diet is typically higher in saturated fat than vegan diets but much lower than meat-diets. And ovo-lacto vegetarians too have greatly reduced levels of heart disease. Nonetheless, ovo-lacto vegetarians need to beware their intake of dairy products as well as their consumption of margarine and other processed food that may be high in hydrogenated fats (Trans-Fats) which are saturated.

Heart Disease and Ovo-Lacto Vegetarians - Bottom Line
A heart-healthy ovo-lacto vegetarian diet should contain a maximum of 30 percent calories in the form of fat, of which no more than one third (10 percent of total fat) should be saturated.

The Caused of Distressing Acne

by: Michael Sanford
If you are on your teenage years, pretty good chances that you have some acne. About 8 to 10 preteens and teens have acne along with many adults. It is but a common skin problem that is considered to be a normal part of puberty. Apparently, it does make teen or any individual uncomfortable and it doesn’t make it easier when you look in the mirror and see the big pimple on your face or chin. However, there is good news such as simple steps that will help you feel better about your face.

Acne is a skin condition that shows up as different types of bumps including whiteheads, blackheads, pimples and cysts. You are always wondering how those pimples have grown onto your face or the how you got those zits on your back. The simplest scientific explanation that you could know is that your skin is covered with tiny holes called hair follicles or pores. These pores contain sebaceous glands also known as oil glands that make sebum, oil that moisten your skin and hair. Glands, most of the time, make the right amount of sebum and the pores are fine. But sometimes, a pore gets clogged up with too much sebum, dead skin cells and germs called bacteria thus causing you to have acne.

Doctors believe acne results from several related factors but the exact cause is unknown. One important factor is the increase in hormones called androgens (male sex hormones). The increase in hormones during puberty causes the enlargement of sebaceous glands thus making more sebum. Also, the hormonal changes related to pregnancy or starting or stopping birth control pills can cause acne. Hereditary or genetics is another factor that acne may be related to. Others believe that the tendency to develop acne is inherited from parents. Certain drugs including lithium and androgens are known to cause acne. Likewise, greasy cosmetics may alter the cells of the follicles and make them stick together thus producing a plug.

Moreover, there are many myths about what causes acne. People often blame chocolates and greasy foods but foods seem to have little effect on the development and course of acne in most people. Dirty skin is as well believed to cause the skin disorder; however, blackheads and other acne lesions are not caused by dirt. Lastly, stress does not cause acne. Obviously, there are several factors that can make the acne worse. The changing hormone levels in the adolescent girls and adult women 2 to 7 days before their menstrual period starts affect the worsening of the acne. Leaning on or rubbing the skin, environmental irritants, squeezing or picking at blemishes and hard scrubbing of the skin are other factors that could worsen acne conditions.

Aside from the dermatologist who specializes on skin problems, there are doctors who treat all kinds of acne, particularly those of severe cases. Family practitioners, pediatricians or internists may treat individuals with milder cases of acne. It is always the goal of the treatment to heal existing lesions, stop new lesions from forming, prevent scarring as well as minimize the psychological stress and embarrassment caused by the disease. The drug treatment is to reduce several problems playing a part in causing acne; abnormal clumping of cells in the follicles, increased oil production, bacteria and inflammation. The doctor will recommend one of several over-the-counter (OTC) medicines or prescription medicines either topical (applied to the skin) or systematic (oral medication) depending on the extent of the person’s acne.

Walking for Weight Loss and Health

Author: C Lynn Beebe
Walking has long been the exercise of choice because it is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to lose weight and improve your health. Walking as a cardio exercise can benefit anyone – young or old. For these reasons, walking continues to be popular with fitness enthusiasts everywhere.

No gym membership or expensive equipment is required to enjoy this superior weight-loss tool. An added bonus is getting to enjoy the quiet joys of nature and breathing in fresh air while clearing your mind at the same time. Some testify that walking is the best way to squeeze healthy exercise into a busy schedule.

The beauty of walking is that you have to do it anyway as part of your daily routine. Walking for weight-loss needs to be at a brisk pace in order to provide a truly effective workout.

Many experts now recommend exercise “intervals” where a period of time is spent at a difficult pace followed by a period of time at a slower “recovery” pace. Alternating difficult and recovery intervals can provide an extremely effective fat-burning workout and alleviate boredom. As you can imagine, more calories are burned using the interval method than in simply walking at the same pace for the same amount of time.

If you’re ready to start a walking program, there are several things to consider. By far the most important consideration is whether you are healthy enough to begin the program. Always check with your physician before starting any new type of exercise routine. Your doctor should be able to tell you at what intensity and length you can safely begin your program.

One you receive the “all clear” signal from your doctor, you need to set your goals. Weight loss goals require a different approach than goals intended to gain energy and improve health. Experts now recommend 60 to 90 minutes of activity on most days to achieve weight loss. Thirty minutes will be fine for improved health in most cases.

Don’t despair if you are in the weight loss group and have no idea where to find 60 to 90 minutes a day to exercise. If you are just beginning, even a slight increase in activity will produce positive results at first. In addition, using the interval method of training for about 30 minutes for a couple of your workouts each week can provide a challenging and effective workout.

Other considerations when beginning your program include getting the proper attire. This includes a good pair of walking shoes and comfortable clothing. A new pair of shoes and walking outfit can be the perfect motivator for jump-starting your new routine!

The next thing you have to consider when starting a walking regimen is your schedule. Regardless of recommendations for the perfect time to exercise, the best time to walk is the time when you will actually do it!

Some walkers prefer to begin their day with a walk to jump-start their energy and ensure their exercise is complete for the day. There is no better feeling than knowing you have met your exercise goals for the day and can do as you please with the rest of it.

Others prefer to end their day with a walk, perhaps after dinner. This is a great way to avoid the “couch potato” syndrome and enjoy nature as part of your evening activities. Evening walks could also prove to be a great way to spend more time with your family. Just be sure to keep the pace up for a good workout – walking with others should not slow you down.

You will also have to consider the environment and weather as well as the safety of the areas in which you will be walking. Look for sidewalks and trails in safe neighborhoods. A great alternative to walking outside during inclement weather is walking on a treadmill if you have one. The added benefit of walking on a treadmill is that you can watch your favorite television program without missing your workout. Also, many walkers head to the mall to get out of the rain or hot weather.

Wherever and whenever you choose to walk, use it as a time to reward and renew yourself. You will reduce stress levels, burn calories and improve your overall health. Enjoy!

Get rid of Cellulite

By: Barry Lycka

What Is term of "Cellulite" means ?
The Cellulite gives the surface of the skin a lumpy often-dimpled affect. Cellulite forms due to water retention in fat cells. The fat cells are surrounded by tissue. The tissue hardens forming a sclerosis. The result is the cottage cheese appearance on the outward layer of the skin. And fatty deposits form because of genetics. It's not your fault you have them. Mesotherapy helps to get rid of the fat to sculpt your body where it's needed.

Many kind of treatment has offered to get rid of cellulite, there's a cosmetic treatment that is going a few rounds with cellulite and small fatty deposits. Mesotherapy is knocking out fat and rejuvenating skin in people who give it a try. Chances are you're doing everything that you can to cut away cellulite and small fatty deposits. You're watching what you eat. You're using creams and lotions. But, nothing is working, right? Well, that's because cellulite is the heavy-hitting problem facing men and women alike. It is one of the hardest cosmetic problems to get rid of!

Gweneth Lowe is the mother of two children. She has been in the ring with fat for about five years. She works out in a gym three times a week for an hour. Still, she could not get rid of the fat in her problem area. Her thighs. 10 sessions with mesotherapy has given her the relief she's been working out for. Lowe says, "I've lost about three inches from my hips. My thighs have shrunk. I'm down to a dress size 6 and loving it!"

Lowe gained her weight and cellulite after having babies. However, doctors believe cellulite and small fatty deposits affects more than 90% of post-puberty women. Wow, I bet you can't believe it affects so many people! We don't have any accurate data on the number of men who suffer from it. Men just don't complain about it as much as women. Cellulite and small fatty deposits are seen as a "ladies problem." You can find the extra fat most commonly on the butt, hips, and legs. Overweight people are not the only ones affected by it. Skinny people can have cellulite and small fatty deposits as well.

The History of Mesotherapy
More and more physicians are putting their money on mesotherapy as a viable means to fight cellulite and excess fat. Mesotherapy has been used in France for years. Dr. Michel Pistor invented it in 1952. However, the treatments popularity is just now coming to the forefront as a safe and effective cosmetic treatment. And it is used in dozens of countries by thousands of trained practitioners.
Recently, one form of mesotherapy has distinguished itself from others. It is known as lipodissolve therapy and it consists of injections of specific "fat busting" agents into the fat.

How Mesotherapy Works
It's quite easy. Let's look at the procedure.
The treatment sessions take only a few minutes. However, you may need several injections over the course of several weeks. Fortunately, the needle that is used is tiny. Doctors' estimate that four to ten sessions is enough to block your ability to store fat and stimulates your ability to burn it up. The drugs are injected into the middle layer of the skin called the mesoderm. That's where mesotherapy gets its name.

The drugs work together to break down fat faster than any other method. A licensed practitioner puts medication and vitamins into the middle layer of the skin using microinjections. The medicine helps to reshape the body. A single mesotherapy session can cost as much as $500 because of the amount of drugs that are used. The treatment uses drugs that are commonly used for asthma and high blood pressure.
Vitamins and supplements are also used to knock out the fat. Two drugs in particular are already approved by the FDA for use in other procedures. One of the medications is an asthma drug called aminophylline. A cardiac drug called Isopreteranol is also used on a widespread basis. Here's two other commonly used medications that are injected into your system. They're called phosphatidylcholine and sodium deoxycholate. These latter two are used in lipodissolve therapy.

How Many Sessions Are Necessary?
As I mentioned, you may have to go through at least three to five sessions before you see any results. The number of treatments depends on several factors including, the severity of the condition and the cause of the problem. Mesotherapy helps to improve the body in many ways. It improves blood flow to the area that's being treated. It dissolves excess fat deposits, removes hardened tissue and improves lymphatic drainage.

How Safe are Mesotherapy and Lipodissolve Therapy?
It's safe according to the doctors and researchers who have trained in it. However some doctors are concerned about the concoction of drugs that are used together to eat away at the cellulite and small fatty deposits. Some say that the Food and Drug Administration should approve all the drugs that are used for use together. So far, they are approved for use apart. And a medical doctor is licensed to use medications as he/she sees fit.
A second concern is what happens to the fatty acids if they are not burned off? Where are they going? The ideal situation is for the fatty acids to burn off. However, a problem could arise if the fatty acids go directly into other tissue. This could lead to damage in the other tissue increasing the risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Fortunately, none of these concerns have materialized despite hundreds of millions of treatments done around the globe. No wonder- for people like Gweneth Lowe the benefits far outweigh the concerns. She says, "I'm just happy to get rid of the excess fat. I eat right. I see my doctor on a regular basis for checkups. I'm happy with the results." You could be too!

Mesotherapy gives you a viable option if you want to get rid of cellulite and small fatty deposits.

Omega 3 foods

There is mounting evidence that boosting consumption of omega-3 fatty acids such as is found in certain types of fish may help prevent numerous disorders, such as heart disease, stroke, irregular heart beats, rheumatoid arthritis, and other autoimmune disorders, mental health disorders including depression, and breast cancer. The theory is the protective effects of omega-3 fatty acids are in part due to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

What if someone is allergic to eat certain fish ? The good news is that you are not limited to salmon. You can get omega-3s in other fatty fish such as sardines, mackerel, canned albacore tuna, rainbow trout, herring, swordfish, oysters, pollock, halibut, whitefish, and anchovies. There are also vegetarian sources for omega 3s. These include flaxseed, flaxseed oil, canola oil, walnuts, and leafy greens.

Detox pads alternative body detox products

by Lee Mac

Why should you use detox pads? Eastern medical studies believe that toxic substances accumulate in the lower extremities (i.e. the feet) hence the popular name of "foot Detox pads or patches", however detox pads can be placed on any area of the body. The reason why it is believed that toxins accumulate in the feet is because they are helped by the natural force of gravity. Asian medical belief also understands that toxins accumulating in the body can lead to many illnesses. Including, rheumatism and arthritis they are thought to be caused by toxic fluid collecting in the joints. Foot detox pads can aid and assist the natural removal of toxins via the process of osmosis. They are believed to assist a multitude of health conditions including, reducing bruising and reducing inflammation improving sleep and reducing stress plus much more. The detox pads contain tourmaline and amethyst (gemstone) powdered and believed to have many medical properties.

    Aging Advantages

Phew! Some things actually improve with age.

    1. Cellulite: While no one has actually quantified it, menopause often brings about a reduction. "Cellulite is more prominent in estrogen-sensitive areas (hips, thighs, butt)," says University of Miami dermatologist Deborah Price. "As women get closer to menopause, they often find that the dimples become shallow and much less noticeable."

    2. Back and chest acne: Body breakouts start to decrease when oil production slows down and skin becomes a bit drier. Acne becomes increasingly infrequent and, eventually, disappears.

    3. Body hair: With age, body hair becomes finer, thinner, and slower-growing. Many women find that by the time they reach menopause, they only need to shave every few weeks. And waxing may become something done only a few times a year.

    4. Excessive perspiration: Like oil production, perspiration peaks in adolescence and then starts to decrease. As you age, you'll notice less sweat and, consequently, less body odor.

    Skin Damage Control for Midsection

    By Christine Fellingham

Telltale signs: You may feel a lack of "snap" in your abdomen. Stretch marks, new moles, skin tags, and tiny red "cherry" spots may also appear.

    At-Home Solutions

Rub away marks: Retinol creams may lighten pinkish stretch marks.

Crunch a new way: Try yoga or Pilates. Ab muscles need to be worked from all directions and in all ways, pulling, twisting, stabilizing.

Do a mole patrol: If you notice any with irregular borders or colorations, or any larger than a pencil eraser, see your dermatologist. (Skin tags and cherry spots are programmed to appear with age, but can be removed.)

A dermatologist can... Laser off spots and marks: Lasers (typically ones used to treat pigment or vascular problems) can zap them in a single session ($300-$600).

Mask stretch marks: The Xtrac Excimer laser temporarily repigments skin for about a month. (Cost: $100.)

Tighten, tuck-free: Doctors are reporting success with radiofrequency options like Thermage for firming. It takes up to ten treatments to see whether Thermage is working. (Cost: $2,000-$2,500.)

    Skin Damage Control for Hands

    By Christine Fellingham

    Hands

We, with the help of science -- and an arsenal of tricks from anti-aging creams to eye-lifts -- have figured out all the ways to keep time at bay on our faces. Problem (if we think it is a problem) nearly solved. Now dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons have rushed into the breach with an array of fixes for just about every other body part. How far will you go to repair the rest of you? The choice is yours, from simple, at-home fixes to more serious procedures performed by doctors.

    Your Hands
Telltale signs: In your 40s, freckles and light splotches start darkening and spreading. Eventually, the already-thin skin on the backs of hands thins further, revealing veins and developing a dry, papery texture. "You'll also notice more dramatic changes in winter -- extreme dryness, cracking, or redness," says Bruce Katz, MD, clinical professor of dermatology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

    At-Home Solutions

Block further damage: Use a sunscreen or lotion (such as Lubriderm Skin Renewal Age Defying Hand Cream SPF 15) daily, whether or not you'll be outdoors. Says New York University dermatologist Deborah Sarnoff, MD, "Sunscreen allows skin to recoup and fade damage that's already surfaced."

Fade brown spots: Lighten with an over-the-counter hydroquinone lotion or a cream designed to diminish pigment, such as Philosophy A Pigment of Your Imagination or Clinique Active White Lab Solutions Hand Cream. You'll see results in about eight weeks.

Avoid self-tanners: "You'd think they'd camouflage spots, but they don't," says Deborah Sarnoff. "The tanner is absorbed and darkens them."

A dermatologist can... Upgrade your lightener: A stronger hydroquinone cream such as EpiQuin Micro can lighten spots in eight weeks. (Cost: $95/tube.)

Zap spots with a laser: Often, all it takes is one treatment. (Cost: $500-$700.) "We can typically do both hands in under an hour with a q-switched ruby, Alexandrite, or Nd YAG laser," says Sarnoff. "You get tiny scabs that last two weeks, but you can cover them with concealer." For difficult-to-treat splotches, check out the Sinon. "This laser vaporizes the pigment without harming skin," says Mitchel Goldman, MD, associate clinical professor of dermatology at University of California, San Diego. "It's best for lighter skin tones."

Pump up hand volume: Fillers such as Restylane or Hylaform are injected in a series of a few syringes, at $750 each. Your hands may look a bit swollen and bruised for a day or so, but you can go back to work that day. "These last four to six months and have no serious side effects," says Sarnoff.

    Choosing The Right Acne Cleanser

Choosing The Right Acne Cleanser by Morgan Hamilton You see acne cleanser ads every day and all of them do promise a kind of miracle cure, though very few actually do cure acne. I've been leading a war against acne for years, but even having reduced the fast food to once per day, all the cleansers I've used so far either do nothing or do so little good that it makes no difference at the end.
