How to Choose The Best Skin Care Product

Your face is the first thing that people notice when they meet you. So, it is no wonder that skin care is big business! Millions are spent each year to treat acne, under eye circles, wrinkles, discolorations, and a variety of other ailments. If you are in the market for a skin care line, there are a few things that you should consider before settling on a product. First you need to look at the type of ingredients the product contains, and then find out what works best for your particular skin type. So, get ready to put your best face forward!

A good skin care product is only as good as its ingredients. Make sure to read the label before you buy. If you are unable to pronounce anything on the bottle, move on to something else. The best skin care products are made with natural ingredients. Look for a formula with Aloe Vera and vitamin E for a great complexion. You want a skin care line that keeps you looking your best, while feeling great on your skin. Cleansers and creams shouldn't burn or sting. Depending on your skin type, you may find that formulas that contain alcohol can actually aggravate your problem. So do your homework beforehand. If you have a specific problem like acne or sun damage, you will want to find a skin care line that focuses on your problem areas. Benzyl peroxide has been known to work wonders on acne, while alpha-hydroxy helps improve the appearance of wrinkles or sun damage.

If you have dry skin, you will want to find a formula that helps replenish the moisture in your face. Products made with Aloe Vera and Vitamin E are particularly good at this. Look for skin care lines that come in a cream or a lotion form. A good humidifier used at night may also help improve your complexion. Always remember that excess washing can actually dry your face out further, so limit your washings to once or twice a day.

If you are plagued by oily skin, you may find that acne is a major problem for you. Here again excess washing can aggravate the problem, so limit washings to once or twice a day. Follow up your skin care routine with a quality astringent or toner. This will help control the amount of oil on your face, and reduce the number of breakouts.

Combination skin can be a tricky situation. You have patches of dry skin as well as oilier regions. Look for a formula that is specifically designed for your type of skin. Oil absorbing masks applied to the T-zone (your forehead, nose, and chin) once a week will help control oil and breakouts.

No matter what type of skin you have, you should have no trouble finding a skin care line to suite your needs. The key is to understand what different ingredients do. Research anything that you don't understand- and don't be fooled into thinking that a product has to be expensive to work. Some of the best products on the market cost less than $10 dollars a bottle!

Beware of Lotion Candles

If you have a love for candles, then you have probably come across or heard of "lotion candles". A "lotion candle" is usually a scented soy candle and is advertised as being a moisturizer for your skin. According to some candle makers, you burn your lotion candle before your bath, making sure to extinguish the candle at least 30 seconds before dipping your fingers into the hot wax, and rub the melted wax onto your body as you would lotion.

I have seen many soy candle makers advertise their candles in this way. As a chandler, I find several things wrong with the practice of using any candle in this way.

1. Dyes in candles are not skin safe. Chandlers do not use skin safe dye in their candles. There are dyes for lotion that are designed to be used in cosmetics and are not harmful to the skin. Dyes for candles are much more powerful dyes and have not been tested for the skin, because they were made for candles not lotion. It takes much more dye to color a candle than to color lotion. At these concentrated levels you may experience some skin irritation.

2. Lotion candles are not made from lotion. I have heard some chandlers say that their candle is made from lotion not wax. There is no such thing as a lotion candle. You can only make a candle from some form of wax. Soy candles are made from soybean wax, which is made from soybean oil. The soy wax that is bought for candle making is not a cosmetic grade of wax. The FDA requires any cosmetic to meet specific requirements to ensure the safety of cosmetic products to the public.

3. Fragrance oils used in candles are not all skin safe. Most candle makers use up to 9% fragrance oil in their candles. Even if a chandler uses skin safe fragrance oil it is only skin safe up to 3%. Having experience making candles, I can tell you that fragrance oil in its pure form can cause a serious chemical burn. It may burn your skin in the same way acid would burn your skin. Therefore, rubbing scented candle wax on your skin may cause irritation to your skin.

4. Never dip your hands into a flaming candle. It is true that soy wax burns cooler than paraffin; however the flame of any candle will burn you severely. "Lotion candles" usually say to extinguish the flame first, but I have seen chandlers demonstrate the use of "lotion candles" at craft shows without extinguishing the flame.

5. If you have children never let them see you dip your hands into a hot candle. Soy wax does burn much cooler than other candles; however a child will not know the difference between a "lotion candle" and a paraffin candle. Hot wax on a child's skin could cause very serious damage. So if you decide to use "lotion candles" please be responsible.

Soy candles are wonderful, but I don't recommend using them as lotion candles. There are several lotions available to you including soy lotion that have skin safe ingredients added to it.

Acne- Does sunshine improve it?

Acne- Does sunshine improve it? by CD Mohatta

Acne and treatments-

Acne has many treatments. Being a very common problem, people have found their own ways of treating acne. Some of them don't cure acne but may further damage the skin. Many of us believe that acne can be treated by getting exposed to sun, but is it true? Let us find out the truth.

Acne- causes

Once we know about what causes acne, we can find out if sunshine affects any of them. The causes of acne are very simple. Because of hormonal changes and sometime pressure or chemicals, body produces more sebum. The gland keeps on producing sebum, but the gland opening gets closed with dead skin. This makes the gland expand like a balloon. The bacteria P.acnes infects the gland and inflames it. This gland forms the acne. If the infection is not severe you will call it black head or white heads, otherwise pimples, cystic acne etc. Please try this acne quiz and know more- Acne Myths

Acne - treatments-

Every acne treatment tries to address one or more of the causes of acne formation. Sunlight does not address any of the causes. What it does is to either burn the skin or tan it. With tanned look, acne looks less apparent and we believe that it is going away. But that is not true. Rather sun damages the skin and may cause early wrinkles, aging and even cancer. Please consult your doctor about acne treatment and stop believing that sun can cure it.

The New Skin Care Solutions - Cosmeceuticals

Cosmeceuticals are the new wave in skin care. They are topical cosmetic-pharmaceutical hybrids intended to enhance the health and beauty of the skin. Skin is the largest organ in the body, both by weight and surface area. In adults, the weight of your skin accounts for about 16% of your total body weight. The skin separates the internal environment from the external. It is essential to protect and preserve the skin for your own personal health and self esteem.

Cosmetic skin care products only serve to cleanse and beautify. As opposed to cosmetics, cosmeceuticals will alter the structure and function of the skin. Let's take a look at some of the ingredients and the science behind why they work.

Centella Asiatica is a botanical agent, which increases collagen production by inducing its precursor enzyme. This ingredient has a shelf life of 6 months, which is why you will not find it in stores. This amazing material reduces the appearance of stretch marks and is currently being researched for its effects on varicose veins.

The FDA recognizes Salicyclic Acid as a proven anti-bacterial destroying agent.

Retinol is a vitamin A treatment, which accelerates the skin cells natural exfoliation process and diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Glycolic Acid is a natural fruit acid, which accelerates the skins cellular turnover. It improves circulation and produces vibrant, smoother, younger-looking skin.

Alpha Lipoic Acid is a powerful anti-oxidant proven to shrink pores, reduce under eye puffiness, and erase fine lines and wrinkles, while improving circulation and brightening your overall complexion.

DMAE is a natural substance that stabilizes and strengthens the cell's plasma membrane. Dramatically tightens, firms, and tones the neck, eyelids, and facial muscles, resulting in a lean, toned, and youthful look.

Sodium Hyaluronate is a protein that functions as a lubricant between the connective tissues of the skin, allowing the retention of skins natural moisture, leaving the skin soft, supple and silky smooth.

Other ingredients include Dimethicone Copolyol Meadowfomate, which is an anti-irritant, retinyl palminate an anti-wrinkles agent, and actifirm, a skin-firming agent. In short, a combination of these ingredients will reverse sun damage and treat acne. They also reduce the appearance of wrinkles, old age spots, and stretch marks. I hope I have convinced you that cosmeceuticals will improve your happiness and your health. I encourage you to contact me with any questions, concerns, or your own rave reviews.

Diagnose Tendonitis Around the Knee Joint

How to Diagnose Tendonitis Around the Knee Joint

Tendonitis is best described as the inflammation, irritation and swelling of the tendons that connect muscles to bones and joints. The condition can affect any tendon and almost any joint in the human body. The most common areas that tendonitis occurs is in the knees, shoulders, ankles, wrists and elbows. In this article we’re going to focus on the three types of tendonitis that affect the knee joint.

Before we take a look at the different types of tendonitis that affect the knee we need to cover some basic knee anatomy. The knee is the connecting joint for three main muscle groups; the hamstrings, the quadriceps and the calf muscle. The hamstring muscles are located on the back of your thigh, the quadriceps muscle is located on the front of your thigh and the calf muscles are located at the back of your lower legs.

The knee joint also comprises of three main tendons. These are the hamstring, quadriceps and patellar (knee cap) tendon. These tendons are some of the largest and strongest in the human body. We will look more closely at these tendons later in the article. For now, all you need to know is that there are three different types of tendonitis associated with the knee, one for each tendon.

Let’s take a look at how each of these tendons fit into the knee joint and how to tell if that particular tendon has developed tendonitis.

Quadriceps Tendon

It’s very common for the quadriceps tendon to develop tendonitis, especially in professional athletes. The quadriceps tendon runs from the bottom of the quadriceps muscle down the front of the knee underneath the patellar (knee cap). If you have quadriceps tendonitis you will feel the pain directly above your knee cap. In some cases, the pain may extend up the front of the leg. The pain will feel worse when you sit down, or bring your foot up towards your buttocks. This is because the quadriceps tendon and muscle have to stretch. You may also find if you have quadriceps tendonitis that the area where your quadriceps meet your knee cap there might be some redness and swelling.

Hamstring Tendon

Hamstring tendonitis is often misdiagnosed as another form of knee injury. This is because the area that gets inflamed is often quite small (despite the large size of the hamstring tendon) and is close proximity to the back of the knee. The hamstring tendon connects to the knee outside of the back of your knee joint. If you have hamstring tendonitis you will feel the pain either in the tendon on the outside of the knee or on the back of the knee. If you feel the pain in the outside of the knee it’s obvious that the pain is coming from the hamstring tendon, but if it’s behind the knee it’s difficult to tell because the hamstring tendon goes deep into the knee. The pain will be at its worst when you try to straighten your leg out, where the tendon is forced to stretch. You will also feel increased pain when you try to twist your foot or point your toes at your knees. Often the entire back of the knee is swollen, but in its early stages hamstring tendonitis will only swell around the outer area of the hamstring tendon.

Patellar Tendon

The correct name for the knee cap is the patellar. Patellar tendonitis is one of the most common forms of tendonitis and the most common form around the knee joint. The patellar tendon starts behind the patellar and extends down to the tendons in the lower leg. So if you were to look at your knee from the front, the quadriceps tendon enters the knee at the top behind the knee cap and the patellar tendon extends from behind the knee cap down to the lower leg area. When you have patellar tendonitis you will feel the pain just below your knee cap or behind your knee cap. You will probably feel the pain whenever you move your knee, in any direction. Sometimes you may hear a popping or grinding sound as you move your knee around. This is because the area is inflamed and the tendon does not have enough room to move.

So, the important points to note from this article are that there is three types of tendonitis that can affect the knee; quadriceps tendonitis, hamstring tendonitis and patellar tendonitis. These are three separate tendons. If you need any more advice about how to treat tendonitis see the links below. Tendonitis can be treated without seeing a doctor, but first you must accurately diagnose which tendon is affected. The next article I will write will be about treating tendonitis symptoms.

Zinc, And It's Effect On Acne

Zinc, And It's Effect On Acne by Henry Jordan

There are many different vitamins with which a vitamin deficiency of them can lead to acne problems. One such vitamin is Zinc. Zinc is one of the most important vitamins when attempting to fight and prevent acne due to its many uses and how important it is to the body and the skin. A vitamin deficiency in Zinc alone can cause acne breakouts and therefore maintaining healthy amounts of Zinc in one's everyday diet is very important for those looking to either combat their current acne problem or to help prevent a future one.

Zinc acts as an antioxidant and this is one primary reason why it is so helpful against acne. Antioxidants help to clear the body of toxins and free radicals. These can cause various problems in different areas of the body, and in the skin these can lead to pimples and acne breakouts. Keeping the skin, the largest organ in the body, clear is only too important. Zinc helps to keep the skin clear and healthy and prevent the build-up of these toxins and free radicals, therefore being proactive and helping to prevent acne breakouts altogether.

Zinc is also proactive in the way that it regulates the oil glands. Although what exactly causes pimples is not known, it is known that the sebum excreted from the oil glands plays a big part in the formation of the pimples. Proper oil regulation can lead to fewer and smaller pimples and helps to prevent them from spreading once they do occur. The advantage here is clear and shows why Zinc can help to stop acne before it starts.

Once acne has occurred, Zinc is extremely important due to it being involved in healing tissue and preventing scarring. Those nasty acne scars that result from acne can be healed and prevented when proper amounts of Zinc are present in the body. Acne causes numerous problems and damages the skin in many ways and Zinc helps to heal this damage and keep the scarring to a minimal level.

Zinc also promotes a healthy immune system and helps in the healing of wounds, to top it off. A healthy immune system also lends a hand to preventing acne and Zinc helps to maintain that healthy immune system in a variety of ways. This is just icing on the cake for those who decide to take Zinc to help with their acne since taking Zinc will also make their immune systems that much healthier and perform that much better.

As is readily seen, the advantages of Zinc in the body, both in how it is necessary to fight and prevent acne and due to it being active in maintaining a healthy immune system, are numerous. A Zinc deficiency can be a leading cause of acne and therefore it is necessary for anyone looking to prevent future acne breakouts to look to consume healthy amounts of Zinc each and every day.

The Natural Way of Beating Dry Skin And Dandruff

Ayurvedic is an ancient medical system from India which empasizes more natural paths to healing through diet, massage and holistic remedies. It classifies individuals according to a metabolic body type or dosha. Each dosha is characterized by a combination of the earth's elements like fire, water, wind, etc. When your doshas are out of balance, ill health can occur. The three doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

For most of my life I've struggled with dry skin and dandruff. I've gone through every cream and shampoo available on the market without any acceptable results. I started to look to diet and more alternative practices for help. I've realized that it is possible to find solutions to dry skin and dandruff through diet, in combination with other health models, such as the Eastern practice of Ayurvedic medicine.

Depending on what body type you are, you could be more prone to dry skin and dandruff. For example, a person with an imbalance in their Vata dosha is prone to dry skin. Various herbal rememdies and oils can help to restore balance to specific problems. With Vata, a regular body and scalp massage with sesame or sweet almond oil is recommended. For Pitta the oil would be coconut and for Kapha try olive oil. These can all be found in health food or grocery stores if you don't have a store that specializes in Ayurvedic remedies. You can also gently heat the oils in the microwave for a more intense moisturizer. Another great natural moisturizer is a mixture of egg yolks and honey.

In addition to topical remedies, you can also work on your body from the inside out. Diet has a great impact on dandruff. Try these following dietary tips:

-Cut back on sugar and yeast. Foods that contain high levels of these ingredients can encourage fungus growth that causes dandruff. Unfortunately, that includes beer and wine!

-Pack your diet full of B-vitamin, Omega 3 fatty acids, and zinc rich foods like egg yolks, fish, whole grains, bananas, avocados, nuts, seeds, flaxseed, and spinach. These nutrients help maintain healthy hair and skin and zinc is actually found in many anti-dandruff shampoos.

-Use a tea tree oil shampoo on your hair. This is a very popular natural product from Australia, and has been used as an antiseptic, antibiotic and antifungal agent. This is the only anti-dandruff shampoo that has worked for me!

These are only a few tips that can help to restore your body to optimal health. Ayuvedic medicine is as vast as the Western model requiring years of study and knowlege. I hope to have simply provided an introduction to a wide range of help available.

8 Glasses Controversy

In a controversial report in the American Journal of Physiology, researcher Heinz Valtin, MD, a kidney specialist and author of two widely-used textbooks on the kidney and water balance, writes that he finds it "difficult to believe that evolution left us with a chronic water deficit that needs to be compensated by forcing a high fluid intake."

If you have trouble drinking this amount of water, you may already be getting enough liquids in the foods you eat and other beverages you drink. "People think they have to drink 8 eight-ounce glasses of water a day, when this has actually been the recommended amount of fluids," explains Jo Ann Heslin, RD. "Fluid intake can include water, mineral water, non-fat milk, or juice."

Any drink that does not contain caffeine counts toward daily intake, explains Heslin, who in addition adds: "We get a good amount of fluid in the foods we eat."

Other experts allow caffeinated and alcoholic beverages toward the count.

Dr. Valtin believes the notion began as a misinterpretation of the recommendation by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council, which suggested "1 milliliter of water for each calorie of food" (about 60 to 80 ounces). Although the Board added that "most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods," he points out this qualifier seemed to be overlooked, and thus the 8 x 8 rule was perpetuated.

"I have found no scientific proof that absolutely every person must drink at least eight glasses of water a day," says Dr. Valtin. On the contrary, he says, some studies have shown that caffeinated drinks, such as most coffee, tea, and soft drinks -- and, to a lesser extent, even alcoholic beverages such as beer, if taken in moderation -- could count toward the daily total.
